Action at Breville - Para's vs more Germans

We were thinking of a game - another outing for Johns superbly painted Para's, and, as I have a copy of  the Wargames Illustrated Para article, Breville sounded a good idea. We had to improvise a bit with the terrain but generally got the same layout. The 2 Marders were run as Marders, but were shown on the table as a Hetzer and JagdpanzerIV.

Overall another very good game, with the Brits not really getting anywhere until the Shermans showed up. Essentially the same thing as happened actually. The Germans suffered from dire action points throughout the game, and not having a Battlegroup command, were unable to do anything about them. Also, with the action fought out at night it limited the ability to engage at distance. Not that this was a problem for the Pak38, which was pretty useless at long or short range, missing 3 penetration shots, then getting blasted out of its ATG position. A further problem with the germans was the splitting into 2 of the infantry sections, whilst giving a more flexible fire unit, was a royal pain in the ass when rolling for action points without rerolls. In short, more command units needed in a list, radio van is a must, buy mortars for support. Sniper was interesting.

KGN 400pt game - British Para's vs Germans

A game organised by me and John, with 400pts a side. We put up the terrain, which on reflection was to much, with the entry/exit roads easily blocked with as it turned out burning tanks. No exits off the lanes channeled the attacks down easily identifiable avenues of  approach.
In short, a very good game that showed many of difficulties of fighting in Norman bocage
The forces

We ran an encounter game with the forces, which was excellent 'fun', the Tiger going for a shot at the lead Sherman, missing!!!, then being sniped by a Firefly. The resultant wreck blocked entry/exit from the lane. The Stugs then sniped a Sherman, which blocked the entry/exit of the lane on the British side. The game then revolved around feeding in Infantry to push along and force the tanks to retreat, and to push success gained from vehicle mounted mg's.

Learnt a lot more about force composition as well which I tried to put into effect for the next game.

Bovingdon 2012 - BGK Demonstration

I went to the Bovingdon show to help out with a display game organised by Nick Turner on behalf of the South Somerset Wargames club. At 9am Nick received a call to say that his house was about to float away, water coming up to the sill of the back door. Time for the sandbags! The display was a Franco/Prussian display in 28mm. A truly awesome display of painting, which attracted a lot of attention. Nick and Ralph got back about 1.30pm and I could then go to the toilet, although I did spend 5mins at the bring and buy before the doors opened to the public.

Battlegroup Kursk was showing as a display game, with Piers and Warwick doing the honours, opposite the Plastic Soldier Company, who also helped out.

Piers looking on, prior to being awarded best painted army!, or maybe not

Warwick - on the right, explaining the game, Piers on the left (with back to camera) doing some explaining as well.

Table shot of the 6x4 foot table used in a lot of the shots appearing on the web

The rules themselves in plastic binders, 1st proof.

I had the opportunity on Sunday, which was very quiet, to spend some time reading the rule set, and also having the opportunity to talk to Warwick for quite a while about what he was intending to do with Kursk, and where this was going to take him with Normandy ( but not just that ) and how he wanted to make them relevant and still retain a flavour of the different periods and conflicts. I have to say that Warwick did a lot of the talking, and that I fundamentally agreewith where and what he is wanting to do, with Piers. It reaffimed my decision to come fully into KGN, and to support BGK.
BGK is a morale based system, allowing skirmish/battle with an opportunity for both sides to play an historical game with the advantages and disadvantages that both sides enjoyed/endured. The Russians have the Stal! Stal! Stal! and Ura! Ura! Ura! rule as well as Kommissars, with the Germans having a Tiger Ace rule. There are differences with the effects and results of combat, but familiarity with KGN should allow for an easy transition, with some of the hickups of KGN removed or rectified.
Overall, I will be getting a copy of BGK, even though I have finally just got to grip with KGN, but I feel that Warwick and Piers should be supported for what they are doing, which having seen BGK in action, is really an excellent set of rules

Aerial Picture - Normandy

I have come across an aerial picture of the Bocage, and thought I would compare this to my photo taken a few weeks ago.
The first is of Deadmans Corner.

Battle Group Kursk - Display game at Bovvy 7th & 8th July

Warwick Kinrade, Piers Brand and Will ( from Plastic Soldier Company I think) will be doing a display game of BGK. I hope to be there and join in if I can, also getting a sneek peek at the 1st proof of the rules, as well as having a go at the game itself. They will be there over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday. I will be taking my faithful Fuji with me so will hope to get a few pictures, and maybe some freebies - a chart or two perhaps.

Yeovilton Airshow 2012

Just came back from Yeovilton Airshow, which surprisingly had quite reasonable weather. It's a good day generally, but there appeared to be less of it this year than previous years. I was looking forward to seeing the Mustangs scheduled for display, but unfortunately they were not flying today, or on display.

However, as said it was a jolly nice day out with the family, made especially so with a visit to the cider stall - the drink of choice aroundbouts. I managed to get some nice videos clips and some pics of some of the aircraft. I have 3 of the Red Arrows that I think are the best of the lot with my little Fuji Finefix. I have to mention a flyby by an Antonov A124 cargo plane. Russian pilots are always good value for money, and this was no different, with this rather porky sled attempting some elementary tricks. I'm sure the public liability insurance doubled when the insurers were told.

Battle Group Kursk - new WW2 rule system

Well it's now officially out in the open, the release and preorder option for Battle Group Kursk - BGK. It costs £30, with a bonus StugIII from the Plastic Soldier Company for the first 500, and entry into a prize draw as well for a large wedge of PSC goodies. Visually impressive, hopefully surpassing KGN for playability and value for money. Yes I may preorder but details etc will be forthcoming from Piers Brand and Warwick Kinrade via various websites - Guild in particular. A preview outing to Bovington has been organised, which I will be going to instead of Devizes. Hopefully grubby tanks will be there as well.
So watch the web, and of course this space.

Regimental Combat Team Smith

My US armour has slowly been getting finished off, and I have finally got round to getting a photo or two. Included in this is an Armoured Infantry Platoon.

The Armour is of 4 squadrons of 3 Shermans each, 2 M4 'Jumbos' with 105mm guns, with a Recce squadron of an M5 and 2 M8 armoured cars. The Armoured infantry is an HQ M3, 4 M3's, 2 M21 mortars with trailers, an M16 SPAA, M7 105mm SPG, 2 M10 tank destoyers, M20 utility car, 2 recce jeeps and a Medic jeep.

Nearly all the tanks require accessorizing with various detritus, which I'll be getting round to shortly. There are also a few bits I'm still trying to get sorted; a couple of weapons carriers and towed A/T guns, and an armoured dozer and Sherman dozer will be arriving soon.

South Somerset Wargames Group

I suppose an introduction to the 'club' is in order, as nearly all my wargaming activity is based in and around SSWG. We are very much like any other groupof like-minded individuals with a common obsession. That said they are a very nice bunch of people.

There is a lot of FoG going down, Renaissance and Napoleonic, with a base firmly established in Ancients. We have a very strong FoW lead by Colin, who is very involved with the FoW UK scene. And we have a range of 15mm, 20mm and 28mm collectors.

I'm doing my best to promote 20mm WW2, and there are several people who have collections. KGN is being played, though not really any other systems. KGN gives a very reallistic and playable freeflowing game.

Games are organised at Ilchester practically every Thursday, with a meet down at Stratton just outside Dorchester. This is the Dorchester club meet - once a month. The club has many crossover members with Dorchester and the Weymouth Levellers, and all the local clubs try to support each other, as well as welcome in other gamers from the above clubs.
